‘FEMI ADEDEJI, FANIM

(A PROFESSOR OF MUSIC AND SACRED MUSICOLOGY)

Samuel Olufemi Akinwumi Ajayi Adedeji (a.k.a AdeJesu) was born and raised under the arms of the Mother of Apostle Ayo Babalola, Mama Talabi, in Erio Ekiti., as the eldest son in the family of Prophet Reuben Adebamiji Fesojaye Adedeji some decades ago. He attended Babalola Memorial Grammar School, Odo Owa, Kwara State and had his Higher School Certificate at Ondo State College of Arts and Science (OSCAS), Ikare Akoko, Ondo State in 1983.

‘Femi Adedeji is a multitalented man in the two worlds of Christian ministry and academics at the same time. He studied music privately and developed himself to the level of taking it as a career. He was a student under Nigerian ‘greats’ such as Professor Joshua Uzoigwe (Composition and Piano) and Professor ‘Tunji Vidal (Musicology) at the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where he had his B.A. (Music) and Professor Mosunmola Omibiyi-Obidike (African Musicology) at the University of Ibadan where he had M.A. and PhD in Music respectively. He was later inspired by the World acclaimed Professors Akin Euba and Meki Nzewi. In addition to his music credentials, Pastor ‘Femi Adedeji was certified in Theology at Carver Bible Institute, Atlanta (for C.Th); Universal Divinity College, an affiliate of Acadia Divinity College, Canada where he bagged his B.Th and Obafemi Awolowo University for M.A. in New Testament. Professors Andrews Igenoza (Old Testament Theology) and Chris Manus (New Testament and African Theology) were two of his notable Theology Teachers. In 1997, ‘Femi Adedeji was in Haggai Leadership Institute, Hawaii, U.S.A. where he studied to earn Certificate in Advanced Leadership Skills.

Professor Adedeji was a choirboy at Christ Apostolic Church Isegun Moore, Ile Ife as early as 1969. He became an Organist, Choirmaster, Composer and Music Director; and served in many Christ Apostolic Churches, including Ondo, Ikare Akoko, Lagos and Ile Ife respectively. In addition, he was well groomed in C.A.C. Students’ Association under Pastor AriJesudade before he served as Evangelist-in-training under Late M.B. Oyeyemi. He had direct prophetic anointing through the laying of hands of his father, Fesojaye Adedeji and other great men that were directly anointed by the world renowned Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola: Late Prophet D.O. Babajide, Late Pastor A. O. Olutimehin, Late Prophet S.O. Akande of Ede, Late Prophet P.A.A.A. Egabor and Late Prophet T.O. Obadare. Hence, he remains one of the direct connections of the ‘Prophetic Chain’ of Christ Apostolic Church. A Prophetic teacher, Theologian and Musicologist; ‘Femi Adedeji (AdeJesu) although had his divine calling since 1981, received the fulltime ministry in 1987 when he served as a National Youth Service Corper in C.A.C. Theological Seminary, Ile Ife and was ordained a Pastor in Christ Apostolic Church in 1988. He served as a Lecturer in C.A.C. Theological Seminary between 1987 and 1993, where he taught  Music, CAC History, African Traditional Religions and World Religions. He composed the popular School anthem of the Seminary (Education is good) in 1987. He yielded to the Holy Spirit to establish the Church branch known as Christ Apostolic Church (The Truth of the Gospel) in Ile Ife in 1987 and Ikotun, Lagos in 1997. where he currently serves as the Senior Steward. 

In 1991, Pastor ‘Femi Adedeji was nominated as a representative of Christ Apostolic Church to be trained in Theological Education by Extension in Organization of African Instituted Churches, Nairobi, Kenya and was certified as a Reverend same year. There, he produced seven publications as study materials. He is also the Pioneer and Coordinator of  Joseph Ayo Babalola Prophetic and Revival Centre, also known as ‘Mount Bethel’, a Prayer Mountain in Erio-Ekiti, hosting  the Prophetic Night (a monthly prophetic renewal prayer gathering that first started in 2008 at CAC Mount of Mercy in Erio Ekiti), Joseph Ayo Babalola  School of Prophets (which he started since 2007) and the Endtime Revival Networks Prayer Congress,(a bi-annual Revival  Prayer Congress). 

By the grace of God, ‘Femi Adedeji was the immediate past Chairman of Joint Christian Ministers Crusade, Ile Ife, an organization saddled with the promotion of Revival in Nigeria. He had authored and edited spiritual books such as O to Akoko lati wa Oluwa (1993), CAC, Woo bi awon Alagbara re ti n Subu ti awon ohun Ija re si n Segbe (1998), Self Delivearnce Prayer Manual (2011), That the Power of Christ may Dwell in Me :towards a Theology of Weakness (2012), Prophetic Ministry in Christ Apostolic Church: The Oddisey of Prophet Fesojaye Adedeji, an unsung Hero (2013) and Biblical Christian Leadership in Honour of Samuel Olubusuyi AriJesudade (2014). 

As an academic, Professor ‘Femi Adedeji started his career in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife as an Assistant Lecturer in 1995 and was promoted to the ranks of Senior Lecturer in 2003 and a Reader (Associate Professor) of Music in 2006. He became full Professor in 2009. He was the Acting Head (in 2007/2008 & 2008/2009 Sessions) and currently the substantive  Head of the Department of Music, Obafemi Awolowo University, since 2012/2013 session. By God’s grace, he served as the National Secretary of the Association of Nigerian Musicologists since between 2008 and 2012 before he became the President in 2012 to 2017, the eras that witnessed many achievements to the glory of God. He was attained the Rank of a Fellow of the Association of Nigerian Musicologists (FANIM) in 2017.

A great mentor and motivator; he is also, currently, an Adjunct Professor and the Coordinator  of the Postgraduate programmes in the Faculty of Church Music, Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary, Ogbomosho. He is the Adjunct Coordinator of the new School of Christian Music of CAC Theological Seminary in Ile ife. Besides, he is a Consultant to the Life School of Music of Life Theological Seminary, Ikorodu. In addition, he was a facilitator, Living Spring Music Festival (1995-2008); JAMB Examiner & Moderator (2005-2009); PGMAS Moderator, Nigerian Universities Commission, (2009); served as External Examiner and Assessor to several Departments of music in Nigeria; including LASU, UNILAG, University of Ibadan, UNIZIK, UNN, DELSU and Federal College of Education, Abeokuta. He has been able to produce about twelve (12) M.A. and four (4) PhD candidates, apart from three (3) DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts in Church Music) and about eight (8) MCM (Master of Church Music candidates in Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary Ogbomoso, He has also served as External Examiner to no less than 50 Master’s and PhD theses. 

As a gospel musician, ‘Femi Adedeji pioneered his music ministry known as Gospel Echo Band in 1983 which later metamorphosed to The Prophetic Voices. The group performed and ministered in Christian activities and concerts till date. He established and directed the Ife Mass Choir in 1994 and also pioneered and directed ‘Gospel Music Extravaganza’, a Quarterly Music concert held in Lagos, between 1998 and 2004. The Institute of Christian Music and Research Centre, a self-sponsored research outfit was established by him since 1998. He organized and directed ASAPH National Christian Music Workshop/Concert (an Annual event) between 2001 and 2007. He was for several years, the Zonal Chairman of the Gospel Musicians’ Association of Nigeria, Ile Ife. He has about 14 albums to his credit, some of which are Ekiti State Rise and Shine and the popular Ona Abayo Da? which featured ‘A! ni ipinle Osun’, a Yoruba song waxed as a track, still  played on Osun Radio till date. ‘Femi Adedeji has several compositions, some of which are being used for performance and teaching purposes both in and outside the academia. 


An erudite scholar and prolific writer, the Rev’d. ‘Femi Adedeji is an African musicologist and theologian, a theorist, composer, choral director, hymnologist, singer and specialist in voice training and Church/Gospel music. Two new theories already propounded by him are Theological (Bibliological) Musicology and Transformative Musicology. Some of the Journals to which he serves as editor include Nigerian Christian Music Guide which as Chief Editor produced six volumes), Nigerian Music Review, JANIM: Journal of the Association of Nigerian Musicologists, Journal of Nigerian Music Education and African Musicology Online based in Kenya. He was a member of the International Advisory Board of Intercultural Musicology Conferences pioneered by Prof. Akin Euba. He is still the honorary Provost of Bola Are School of Gospel Music, Ibadan. ‘Femi Adedeji is a member of Pan African Society for Musical Arts’ Education and an Associate member and distinguished fellow of the Centre for Black Music Research, Chicago. He established and directed the Bureau for the Development of African Musicology since 2006 in order to advance the ‘African’ voice in global sphere. ‘Femi Adedeji has travelled extensively both in Nigeria and Overseas including Ghana, Kenya, Spain, Malaysia, UK, USA for academic and mission purposes and his over One Hundred (100) academic and creative publications have appeared in several local and International Journals and Books. With several awards received from numerous bodies, his academic goal currently is to mentor upcoming academic musicians while he is working hard to fulfil God’s purpose for his life as an instrument of Endtime Revival in the Church, especially Christ Apostolic. 

God gives him a wonderful wife, Eunice Adesoye Olukemi hailed from Akure in Ondo State. She holds Grade II, NCE, B.A. and M.A. in Music Education and Educational Technology respectively. She is currently, a music teacher at the Staff School of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. She is a wonderful woman and wife par excellence. With five (5) biological children (‘Seyi, Kayode, ‘Feyikemi, ‘Peyibomi and Paul), many adopted children and numerous spiritual and musical sons and daughters, ‘Femi Adedeji has nothing to glory of, except that he is a debtor of God’s manifold grace.
